While wild mice are highly resistant, inbred laboratory mouse strains such as Balb/C and C57BL/6 mice are susceptible to a variety of influenza viruses. Some strains can cause disease in mice without adaptation but for seasonal H1N1 and H3N2 strains adaptation is required. Changes in body weight, health score and mortality are used to evaluate efficacy of treatments and vaccines against specific strains.
