Job Purpose 

 

The Animal Research Technician will assist in conducting rodent studies with strict adherence to approved IACUC protocols at IBT. The candidate will adhere to IBT operating procedures, maintain accurate records, and keep the lab organized and functional. The successful candidate must be a strong communicator, dependable, collaborative, dedicated to working with animals, and motivated to grow. The candidate must also be willing to comply with the requirements of a contract-research organization (CRO).   

 

Qualifications 

  • Highschool diploma or GED is required. 
  •  AA/AS/BA/BS and/or AALAS certification is a plus but not required. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Tools. Experience with Study Log is a plus. 
  • Position level to be decided based on candidate’s experience: 
  • Entry Level Technician (0-1 years): Demonstrate proficiency in performing the following independently: 
  • Handling and restraint of small rodents (mice, hamsters, guinea pigs and rats) in BSL-2 level facilities, ear tagging, following aseptic techniques and proper PPE requirements. 
  • Performing at least one of the following technical procedures such as IM, IV, SC or IP. 
  • Processing whole blood for serum/plasma isolation. 
  • Any tasks related to animal husbandry or facility sanitation  
  • Level I Technician (1-2 years): Demonstrate proficiency in performing the following independently: 
  • All entry-level responsibilities, plus proficiency in  
  • Most of the technical procedures such as SC, IP, IM, IV, ID, and oral gavage 
  • Blood draw methods & whole blood processing: cardiac puncture, tail vein, submandibular, and retro-orbital 
  • Clinical observations and weight collection.  
  • using isoflurane anesthesia and CO2 euthanasia. 

Responsibilities 

 

  • Responsible for conducting technical procedures as per study design and approved DOPs assigned by team manager 
  • Conduct & participate in general animal care: animal intake, clinical observations and husbandry 
  • Assist or train in the following procedures 
  • SC, IP, IM, IV, ID, and oral gavage  
  • Lesion and/or tumor measurements, as needed 
  • General tissue harvest: lungs, kidneys, spleen, liver, and brain 
  • Advanced tissues: harvests: wounds, lymph nodes, nasal tissue, BAL, as needed 
  • Ear notches and/or tail snip collections for genotyping 
  • Handling & experiments with cannulated animals, as needed 
  • Assist with breeding colony maintenance, as needed 
  • Responsible for daily monitoring/ upkeep of the vivarium, routine cleaning, inventory management, lab organization and waste disposal responsibilities within the facility.  

 

Reporting requirements 

 

  • Knowledge of IACUC/OLAW/USDA regulations/guidelines/policies documentation 
  • Willing to comply with health and safety requirements as needed 
  • Ability to safely handle chemical disinfectants and tolerate rodent facility odors 
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays (team rotation) 
  • Ability to lift/push/pull up to 50lbs 
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time 
  • Ability to reliably commute to work
